Blackwood River Canoe Trail
WA's Premier Paddling River
About This Walk
The Blackwood River is one of Western Australia's premier canoeing and kayaking destinations, and the longest continuously flowing river in the South West, stretching 383 kilometres from the Southern Wheatbelt to the Southern Ocean at Augusta. The paddleable sections traverse diverse landscapes including farmland, pine plantations, national parks, and regenerated jarrah forests.
The most popular paddling corridor runs between Bridgetown and Nannup, divided into four sections: Bridgetown to Rocky Bluff, Rocky Bluff to Maranup Bridge, Maranup Bridge to Wrights Bridge, and Wrights Bridge to Nannup. Each section offers different scenery and conditions — from calm pools reflecting towering trees to gentle rapids that add excitement.
In summer, the river offers calmer waters ideal for families and beginners. During winter and spring, the river fills with long flowing pools and some rapids, presenting opportunities for more adventurous paddlers. Canoe hire is available in Bridgetown and Nannup, and public access points are well-marked along the river.
